<p>The Catechism makes a statement about spiritual gifts that surprises most Catholics twice. First: charisms — spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit for the good of others — are given to <em>every</em> baptized person, "whether extraordinary or simple and humble" (CCC 799). That includes you. Second: no charism comes with a label attached. "A discernment of charisms is always necessary" (CCC 801). Always necessary — and almost never taught. Most of us made it through years of Catholic formation without anyone explaining <em>how</em> to discern our gifts. This guide is that explanation: the full process, step by step, the way we've walked thousands of people through it.</p>
<h2>First, Know What You're Looking For</h2>
<p>A charism is a spiritual gift given by the Holy Spirit to every baptized person, for the benefit of other people. That last part is the identifying mark: charisms aren't for you — they work <em>through</em> you, for the good of the Church and the world (CCC 799; <em>Lumen Gentium</em> 12). The Church's tradition consistently recognizes gifts like teaching, mercy, hospitality, encouragement, administration, intercession, and healing — we work with a list of 24 charisms drawn from Scripture and the Church's lived experience, <a href="https://www.manypartsministries.com/what-are-the-24-charisms-of-the-holy-spirit">explained here</a>.</p>
<p>Three signs mark a charism in operation, and the whole discernment process is a search for them:</p>
<ol>
  <li><strong>Fruit</strong> — the work genuinely helps people, often beyond what your effort and training explain.</li>
  <li><strong>Joy</strong> — you experience the fruits of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, peace) while doing it, even when it's hard work.</li>
  <li><strong>Recognition</strong> — other people see it and name it, sometimes before you do.</li>
</ol>
<h2>Step 1: Get an Objective Starting Point</h2>
<p>You <em>can</em> start from a blank page, but most people stall there — 24 possibilities is a lot of haystack. An assessment collapses the search space. <h2>Step 2: Pray With What You See</h2>
<p>Take your most likely charisms to prayer — not to ask God for a lightning bolt, but to review your life with Him. Where has this gift already been operating? When have you felt His pleasure in your work? A simple daily prayer works: <em>"Holy Spirit, show me the gifts You've given me, and show me where You want them used."</em></p>
<p>Discernment is a conversation with a living Person, not a personality quiz to score. The Holy Spirit wants you to know your gifts more than you want to know them — He gave them on purpose.</p>
<h2>Step 3: Ask People Who Know You</h2>
<p>Charisms bear fruit other people can see — often more clearly than you can, because you're standing inside your own life. Ask three to five people who know you well: <em>"Where have you seen God work through me? What do I do that genuinely helps you?"</em></p>
<p>Take their answers seriously, especially when they repeat. If three unconnected people mention the same thing, pay attention: recognition is one of the three marks. (This step rescues the gifts you've been discounting your whole life as "just something anyone could do." That instinct to discount is extremely common — and usually wrong.)</p>
<h2>Step 4: Test the Gift in Real Life</h2>
<p>This is the step people skip, and it's the one that actually settles the question. Pick your most likely charism and use it — one small, concrete, low-stakes experiment. Think you might have encouragement? Write the note. Teaching? Volunteer for one session. Hospitality? Host one gathering. Then watch for the three marks: Did it bear fruit? Did you experience joy in it? Did anyone notice?</p>
<p>One test isn't a verdict either — gifts strengthen with use, and a first attempt can be clumsy. Test a few times, in a couple of different settings, before you draw conclusions.</p>
<h2>Step 5: Confirm, Commit, and Keep Going</h2>
<p>When fruit, joy, and recognition line up consistently, you can hold a conclusion with confidence: this is one of my charisms. Now commit to it — say yes to work that fits the gift, and give yourself permission to say no to work that doesn't. A discerned charism is the best filter a generous Catholic can have, because it replaces "someone has to do it" with "this is what God gave me to do."</p>
<p>And then keep going, for a lifetime. Gifts deepen, seasons change, and God entrusts more to those who use what they've been given (Matthew 25:14–30). Reassessing every 3–5 years helps you notice new gifts as they come.</p>
<h2>How Long Does This Take?</h2>
<p>Honest answer: the starting point takes 20 minutes; the confidence takes a few months of praying, asking, and testing; and the deepening takes the rest of your life — pleasantly. Most people find their first one or two charisms come into focus within a season. Don't rush it, and don't let the open-endedness stop you from starting: every step bears fruit on its own.</p>

<h3>Does everyone really have a charism?</h3>
<p>Yes — this is the consistent teaching of the Church. Charisms are given to every baptized person (CCC 799; <em>Lumen Gentium</em> 12). If you've never found yours, the problem has never been that you don't have gifts; it's that nobody handed you a process. Now you have one.</p>
<h3>Can I discern charisms without an assessment?</h3>
<p>Of course — Catholics did it for centuries through prayer, feedback, and testing alone. The assessment simply compresses the "where do I even start?" phase from months to 20 minutes and gives your discernment an objective outside read to push against.</p>
<h3>What if I test a gift and it doesn't go well?</h3>
<p>Then you've learned something valuable at low cost — that's the experiment working. Rule it out for now or try a different setting, and move to the next likely gift. There is no shame in ruling things out; even the "no" results are the Holy Spirit narrowing your search.</p>
<h3>Can charisms change over time?</h3>
<p>The Church's experience says gifts can deepen, expand, and show up in new seasons of life — which is why discernment is ongoing rather than one-and-done. Whether God adds genuinely new charisms over a lifetime is His business; our job is to keep noticing and keep using what He's given.</p>
